Artifacts by Casey Perez

"I like making things that don't follow the traditional notion of what jewelry is supposed to be," says Brooklyn-based designer Casey Perez of her line, Artifacts by Casey. "People think it has to be precious and luxurious, but if my jewelry makes people stop to think for a moment, then I'm happy." The 23-year-old brainy take has roots in her years as a psychology major at NYU, before she took a jewelry class in 2007 that changed her career path. Now, with an online following and some stockists in Brooklyn, she's transforming "boring, banal, everyday objects" into double-take-worthy adornment rings fashioned from light plugs, and some pieces shaped like half-opened jaws. "It's sort of a Duchampian take on jewelry" explains Perez. Now that's food for thought.
