JAMES LONG AUTUMN/WINTER 2011/12 MEN’S COLLECTION

Designer name: James Long

Origin: Northampton, England

Design background: Long completed his MA in menswear and accessories at the Royal College of Art. He worked for Virginia Bates in New York and London before setting up his own label.

Design signatures: “Leather, knits and accessories. Strong, bold, directional menswear.”

How would you describe the James Long man? “The model Alex Dunstan is one of my ideal customers.”

What is your trademark piece? “A leather technique piece and a signature knit.

Name three things that are inspiring you for autumn/winter 2011: “Mayhem, forests and fog horizons.”

What’s next for your brand? “I am doing some womenswear with Lulu Kennedy at Fashion East this season.”

What music is playing in your studio this season? “Forest Swords, Morrissey, The Doors… Plus always Fleetwood Mac and Radio 6 music.”

How does London influence your designs? “The people, the spirit, the risk takers, the humour, the support and the ‘go for it’ attitude. I don't find the weather that inspiring but it makes you daydream about somewhere you’re not! You work around that. There are always so many good shows on that you’re never really stuck for inspiration. But if you are, you can find it on the street as soon as you leave the studio.”
