Hailing from Kamloops, a small town in British Columbia, this self-proclaimed redneck girl counts moving to New York City as one of her biggest accomplishments. "It was extremely hard but my pride kept me here. I'm proud of my pride," Schmidt says. "New York is amazing. You can go out and get a coffee, and you'll probably run into your next gallerist and the future father of your children on the same block."
A remarkable thing about the very talented Aurel Schmidt is that she is self-taught -- a pretty well-known fact by now. Also remarkable is how she managed to conquer the art world at the tender age of 26, without compromising her right to party. Schmidt's often hilarious hyper-surrealist drawings of objects and insects, color-penciled condoms and trees, and her runaway-chic fashion looks -- an irresistible cocktail of raw talent and style -- have enchanted both sides of the Atlantic, from New York to Paris.
